Is abortion legal in Togo?

In Togo, voluntary interruption of pregnancy is authorized when the pregnancy is the result of rape or an incestuous relationship. It is also authorised when the continuation of the pregnancy endangers the life and health of the pregnant woman, or when there is a strong probability that the foetus will suffer from a particularly serious condition.

Post-abortion care services are also legal, although their implementation and access remain restricted.

Cases of voluntary interruption of pregnancy that do not comply with the law “will be punishable by a prison sentence of between one and ten years and a fine of between 500,000 and 3,000,000 CFA francs (762.25 to 4,573.47 euros)”, as stipulated in law no. 2007-005 of January 10 on reproductive health.
